Hello

My 2006 Ford Taurus recently gave me a P0420 code, pointing to a failed cat. Fortunately it is covered under the 80,000 mile warranty, so Ford dealer is currently in process of replacing it.

However, I know that it is not normal for a cat to fail at 72000 miles, so I am wanting to run any possible diagnostic procedures to find something else that may be wrong with the vehicle. I understand that bad spark plugs or bad exhaust valves can be a culprit. Is there anything else me and my mechanic can work on to try and find any problems?

Anything that will cause the engine to burn dirty. It can be excess fuel, unburned fuel, coolant or excess oil consumption. Were there ever any other codes, overheating or previous driveability problems?

I just got the car, but that's the only code that came up. Just passed emissions too, which is odd. It doesn't get great gas mileage (17mpg city), but I understand that this is not unusual for the 2006 Taurus (also the gas mileage has been slowly improving the more I've driven it).

If you are under warranty let then fix it. If you mess with it they might not want to touch it,
