Deep knocking while maintaining a speed

We have a 2007 Renault Clio with manual transmission. After driving for 1h30m a deep knocking sound started when while not accelerating. When take my foot off the gas the knocking stops and when I accelerate the knocking stops. We stopped at a toll booth and it sounded fine going from first to 5th gear but once we reached our cruising speed @3k rpm the knocking came back. Also, when we stopped I opened the hood and had my wife rev the engine and there was no sound at all.
We were driving to an airport and are two hours away from home so I need to know if I can drive it back before we get work done. Thanks in advance for any advice or knowledge. I'll be waiting if anyone needs any further info.

I would not drive it until it is checked out by a professional. You could make it a lot worse.
