Heat and defrost blow hot and cold as the heat gauge goes up and down. After driving for awhile the gauge and blowing heat appear to stabilize. After exiting the vehicle there appears to be a steamy smell or a hot water smell. My son (quite car knowledgeable) tells me I have a head gasket leaking. I was hoping it might be a bad thermostat. Any suggestions?? What may be happening is slow loss of coolant, causing overheat but not low enough to lose heat or wildly boil over to be AVOIDED! Check level as best you can. Hard to see but check vent hold under water pump or any signs of coolant anywhere. Water pump is particularly easy on that engine.
