Crankshaft pulley fell off.... what damage could it have caused? Sign In

Hi

I was driving home last night and there was a massive bang, I had to drive about 200yrds to the parking space and when I looked under the hood the crankshaft pulley had disapeared, I found it on the other side of the road. I was just wondering if this could have caused any more damage or will it be just replace the part, I have a new one ordered?

Thanks a lot in advance if anyone could give any advise, it would be gratefully appreciated.

Sean

P.S the car is a Nissan Almera Tino 1.8 (2003)

You need to look at it closer and find out if the entire pulley came off along with the center bolt or if it just separated the outer portion of the pulley and the center is still there. If the whole thing came off with the bolt, you can pretty much bet the crankshaft is wasted which means new engine but if the pulley itself came apart and the center portion is still there, you can just replace the pulley.

Yes, yes and yes. Unless someone has reinvented the wheel this is the Harmonic balancer for the engine as well as a pulley. Glad it only went 600 yards. Hope the bolt and hub of the thing are still there or would be a first to even hear of for me.

Just know the basic but important idea is for that to cancel vibrations that the engine does make when running. Chance that without that the engine could be hurt. Some risk here for real damage IMO.

If bolt is gone or really fell out perhaps try a new bolt alone and see if it will nicely thread in or if old one broke somehow it's trouble.

Good luck. Can't really think of why or how the entire unit fell off. Outer part with pulley for belt(s) I can understand just not the whole thing all at once as described,

Tom

If the hub got loose on the crankshaft for any reason, it would severely damage the crankshaft due to wobbling before coming off so you won't save it if that happened.

Ya - I smell trouble. A bit surprised there wasn't some wild behavior before this much happened?!

Hi thanks for the replies, not been online for a couple of days.

Yeah the whole thing came off, the crankshaft pulley, the key and the bolt, never found the key or the bolt. I havent managed to get a look at the car yet, got a lot of commitments hopefully will be sunday when i get to look at it.

Unfortunately it doesnt sound good, but thanks again for the replies.

No wild behaviour, was taking the good lady shopping when it happened so the car wasnt above 60mph.

Thanks again

This is a first for me for the whole thing to just fly off but it's more than just a pulley as said above. Again, I'd get just the proper bolt (quite likely a dealer bolt not just any) and make sure threads are good and part of original bolt isn't somehow broken off inside. If all looks good then I'd replace other items missing. If time see if it runs OK if belt(s) are there for a test. Look for damage to anything that sucker hit on its way out too!

What worries me is that bolt about surely had to be loose and slowly work its way out so if that's just what happened belt(s) were out of line for who knows how long and probably no good.

Go easy spending too much money as if crankshaft proves bad or other engine disasters were damaged by lack of balance you just might need a replacement engine as the best way out.

The concept of those things has been around forever in all sorts of engines and different makers,

T

I would bet you have some pretty serious damage to the crankshaft both at the keyway groove and the outside surface from that pulley working back and forth before coming off.
