Coolant leak 1993 Ford Aerostar Van Help Me!!! Sign In

I have a 1993 Ford Aerostar van that is leaking coolant. If the van is not turned on and I pour water in radiator, it instantly starts leaking under the passenger side about where your feet would be. Its a solid stream of water. I had a guy check it that was a mechanic and he said it is leaking out of something and i don't remember what he said this part was. He said there were two of these parts, one on each side and he said the coolant was leaking directly out of one of these parts he mentioned. He said the engine needed to be taken out to repair this, and if you replace one of these parts you should just replace both. I just can't remember what the part was he said it was leaking from. There is a small circular indent in the metal that is where the part is and the water is streaming out right there. Can anyone please tell me what may be going on? Maybe I can get a picture of it to post but until then does anyone have any idea what is happening? He acted like I might as well scrap the Van. It runs perfect and only has 95,000 miles on it. thanks guys

Try for a pic or ask the tech who said what it was!
You can guess it's something on way to heater - a control valve maybe, metal line used instead of hose maybe or what you don't want is the heater core neck(s) themselves leaking and not just a hose!

Other things that can fool you is leaking from something higher than where you see it so really need to know just what item and really fix this before driving it again,

Pictures REALLY would help even without fixing this yourself it could be what I think - a heater hose goes to a pipe that mounts to whatever on way to firewall for heater and is rubber again there. You may be looking at a metal part that just bolts it down right where it's leaking onto it.
Some if those will have a smaller hose part way you don't see that warms intake - I wont detail the thing out just that it's probably super hard to find or a trick to custom make one up to work perfectly.

While waiting for YOUR mechanic finding out exactly and hunting down any possible replacement parts NEW would really help you mechanic in this case if you have good understanding he/she should be happy to have you do the hunting around.

Get some pics or help with pics and maybe we can put a name to it at least.

Again - don't drive it this way more than to move it on premises so you are out of a vehicle till done.

A maybe if this drags on is a radiator shop might be a good bet to make this up. I'm not thrilled about a repair to what I'm thinking of but rather new stuff just custom made. You mechanic should know. Stinks - some dinky thing can hold up the show like this,

If this is leaking coolant from under the dash, then it can't be anything but a leaking heater core.

That sounds like what he said. If its the heater core, would the engine need to be removed for repair and is there one on each side? He said there were two of these parts one on each side and it's leaking directly out of the one on passenger side. He said if you replace one you should replace both. I can't get a photo good enough to show the leak. Does this sound right? I'm trying to find this guys phone number so I can call him back. He said the van is probably not worth repairing.

That would be no on all of those questions. I don't know what he could be taking about.

Friend - you are trying with lack of the total mechanical understanding and great of you to try. Nobody here is sure where this leak is yet! You aren't so anyone declaring this too costly to fix for this vehicle can't know that unless you are showing some other place, person or site we can't see.

Try "Photobucket" or a site like that and you are allowed to post link to the picture(s) required.

Right now I'm not sure what's up except it leaks profusely. So, IS THIS LEAKING INSIDE THE VEHICLE OR OUTSIDE UNDER THE HOOD? It totally matters.

I speak for myself - just spinning my wheels with ideas with no info for sure to peg this for you myself alone. Apparently others as well.

There may be no known anything as to what it will take till it's seen in person. A fast cheap something + cost of coolant or very extensive still all unknown,

He may be talking about a "core plug" which he probably referred to as a "Freeze plug" or "expansion plug"

Feel sorry for the guy that would do freeze plugs on that thing. Aerostar is proof that engineers hate mechanics.

I know without a pic or seeing it its hard for you guys to know. It's leaking under car on passenger side not in cab. The moment Double J said core plug I'm almost positive that's what mechanic said it was. The mechanic who checked it said it was a very bad repair. He even said engine had to be taken out. I took pics of leak but my camera isn't good enough. My friend is bringing me a better camera. If i get a decent pic I'll post it. But core plug I'm almost sure that was it. The guy said there were two of them one on each side and if you replace one you should just replace both. You have to be a detective to be a mechainic I guess. I think I'm gonna just have to take this van out to gun range and blow it to pieces

Pulling the engine on that vehicle would be around 10 hours+ the labor to remove and install the plugs. I am sure there are more than two freeze plugs. There are probably some on the heads and behind the bell housing also.

He'll probably run into other crap if he pulls the engine(chuckles), so there may be more labor and parts involved. When I see one of those appear at our shop, I'm usually the first one to hide in the bathroom.

Most the time the core plugs get eaten up because of neglected coolant service. If the system is all rusted out inside, which is common on those, it will be a never ending battle with coolant system issues. The last one I worked on ate my lunch (still going to therapy for that one). It had a leaky radiator, the hoses were original and crunchy, and it ended up getting a water pump also because impellers vanes were corroded off. The coolant system inside looked like the walls of a septic tank and the coolant reservoir had three inches of sludge on the bottom. I flushed that thing for hours. The new coolant still turned brown after doing a test drive. We informed the customer that there was no telling what other kind of problems are lurking or damage may have been done to the engine. They gambled anyway and just wanted it to last for a little while longer. Three month later it came back on the hook with blown head gaskets. They even finished the lower end off by driving it till it shut off. We told the customer it's done and off to the bone yard it went.

If listed/said "Freeze Plug" (other names for those too) it almost always involves doing all of them as already said and the problems never end from the neglect.

They make an assortment of trick ones to do just one hard one and dump the thing. Even those can't always be installed depending on where without taking engine out.

Again already said the muck of rust mud that fell to the bottom of water jackets you'll never get out.

If that's what it is without some reason it's only one time to think about this thing overall. 1993 - this could have happened ages earlier and been given up on,
