Just last night, after driving my car for awhile all of a sudden I hear what sounded like metal scraping the ground. I stopped the car, got out checked assuming I ran over something, got back in drove for less than a few feet and the AWFUL noise started. Any ideas if its the timing belt going, a rod knocking or piston and above all will this come down to an engine replacement (which I cannot afford) It doesn't start right away hen the car is turned on, only when its driven a few feet or so.

My car is a 2004 a4 audi, 1.8 turbo engine, roughly 150,000 miles give or take

Sounds t me like a water pump comingf apart but it could me any one of the belt driven components. I would first remove the drive belt and check all the pulleys. If no problem there you may have to remove a timing cover to check the belt components.

If it was the water pump wouldn't there be low coolant/leaking and overheating? The car isn't leaking any kinds of fluid, no warning lights for overheating/low oil etc

Might not leak. That's an awful sound. Do as Hammer suggested NOW. Not much point in anything until you narrow it down with belt off first and to me sounds like a belt driven something but you won't know till you try and check.....

Figured it out. my a/c compressor basically blew up and the noise was caused by the clutch trying to constantly engage. Granted its roughly a $1,000 fix I'm still so relieved its not the engine or any of its components
