I have a chip the the paint on the trunk of my car and need help. I cannot find the touch up paint for my car and don't really mind the chip. However it is starting to bubble and spread and I am freaking out. I bought a tube of clear coat touch up paint, but it is winter here and i was told it had to be warm for the clear coat to seal properly, its avg 20-35 degrees F around here. Can I use the clear coat, will it seal properly. If not what can I do to temporarily stop or slow the process of the bubbling/chipping. I am at a total loss here and need help desperately I don't want the chip to get any bigger. (its about 1"X1/4")

Even if you had the exact touch up paint, unless plain black it's going to show. I suggest scraping the area free of the loose bubbled paint and using the water based "rust reformer" which goes on like milk and dries black and is a primer for next color and clear on top. You must have time and dry room temps. It's a battle. You can match up if you have a chip large enough with any close color AFTER you've stalled the rust. Haven't seen a colored touch up that claimed to have rust proofing qualities yet!

NAPA carries the rust reformer as do other places. Again that approach must be covered with paint or it won't work and claims won't work if not allowed at least 24 hours dry time. It does really help but admit that you will not cure it easily and it will return but can delay that quite a while,

Well I dont even want to color it in, its not a really noticable chip and there's no rust. I just want to put a clear coat to seal the chip and stop it from chipping more, but its winter and i dont have warm temperatures.

OK: I'd scrape off loose paint. Q-Tip some WD-40 on area and tape over it. When temps cooperate use a rust proofing paint after cleaning it with perhaps rubbing alcohol. Clear coat probably will do little on its own,
