Cat converter on 2000 Corolla Sign In

2000 Toyota Corolla, just bought used. It failed emissions inspection. The auto shop said it needs a new catalytic converter. They said the O2 sensor is fine. The price they quoted to replace it was $1900 including labor. That's more than I want to pay.

My question: What are my options?

I'd consider ordering the part and doing it myself, but the converter is welded to the exhaust pipe, and I don't really have the tools to be sawing and welding on the car.

There are catalytic converters compatible with 2000 Corollas for sale online for as low as $70-100. Could I order one and then hire someone to install it? Are ones in that price range worthless? Do I need an exact replica of the original part?

What can I do to save money? I'd appreciate any advice.

thanks!

If you go to an exhaust specialty shop, you should be able to get the correct one welded in for under $300. Don't even think about trying to install it yourself.

Thanks for the help. I hope that's true. God.. what explains $1900 vs. $300? Seems crazy. Is that shop just ripping people off?

Original equipment converters come with the entire pipes and are always expensive. The exhaust shop has universal units that can be welded into the existing pipe. This will work as long as the converter is in an accessible area which yours is. I've done many of them.
