Car wont start after oil change Sign In

Hello everybody! We purchased a used vehicle (2006 Cadillac SRX 3.6L V6) and recently started having issues about a month ago. Started off seeing the RPMs bounce up and down as we were driving a constant speed. later started hearing knocking and grinding sounds, and twice it has stalled. I checked the oil and it wasnt even registering on the dip stick. When i drained the oil, there was just under 1 quart of oil in there. i replaced the oil filter and put in 5 quarts of high mileage synthetic oil. Afterwards, the car will not start at all. It cranks, but will not start up. I borrowed a friends scanner and these are the readings that change from idle to when i turn the key to start the vehicle.

RPM 128
CALC LOAD% 100
MAF FLOW GE/SE 2.8
ABSLT TPS% 14.9
IGN ADV DE 6
ABSLT LOAD% 65
THROT CMD% 8.6

if you need more reading I can check again and get those. Any clue to what could be going on? I have unplugged the battery for about 5-10 minutes, tried doing a flood purge, and checked connections. nothing was touched at all during the oil change except the air filter, oil cap, and oil drain plug. thank you very much for any input!

! How long have you owned this vehicle? Do or did gauges and warning info work on this thing? Would probably take a whole day to read its owner's manual to know what it's supposed to do on it's own and surprised it didn't shut down on it's own faster than that. First on the list is oil capacity is 6 qts w filter not 5.
Unhooking battery no doubt requires resetting this thing probably thru radio and more to run again at all as an antitheft feature.

If your measurements and notes are even close you wrecked or finished off this engine from an oil consumption problem either leaking or burning it and kept driving till engine was beyond repair now.
Quoting you">> Started off seeing the RPMs bounce up and down as we were driving a constant speed. later started hearing knocking and grinding sounds, and twice it has stalled. I checked the oil and it wasnt even registering on the dip stick.<<"
IDK if you ignored warnings or they didn't work but those observations alone suggests this engine is done and the fix would easily out cost the value of this thing sorry to say,

Your title says "won't start after oil change" It should read "won't start after being run with no oil"

That scanner data is no help in this situation. You need to go back to basics.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Any trouble codes stored in the PCM?
When you drained the oil was there any metal in it? Good bet the engine is toast.
