My poor 89 Plymouth Reliant isn't being so reliable. I've had a few problems in the last few months and now another (big) one. I went on a trip to Wichita, KS from Minnesota and took the ol' reliant. I've only used it for commuting for probably about a year now. After about 100 miles going 65mph on the highway the car went "sputter................sputter........sputter....sputter..sputter,sputtersputter" so I popped it into neutral and pulled onto the shoulder. I saw nothing wrong under the hood so we kept going. All the way to Kansas City it did this about every 50-100 miles. I dropped it off there and rented a car to take the rest of the way. On our return trip the same thing happened every 100 miles or so. It seemed like the longer I let the car rest after a sputtering episode, the longer it lasted on the next stint. Any idea what might be going on?

Guess: Very sticky valve exacerbated by heat. Check compression when it's doing it to diagnose for starters, T
