Car makes humming sound when off Sign In

It does this all the time when it's not even running and the doors are shut and nothing is on. It's all the time but I don't know what it is at all. The only thing I can think of is one time my cars alarm went off at night and drained the battery. Other than that I don't know what could be causing it? It's a 1994 Chrysler concord.

Have you gotten under it to try to isolate where the noise is?

Find it. Look-see feel (Nick would go for that) but just find what is doing what and why.

Sorry Nick - feeling silly,

Tom

can you feel any air, even a little, blowing out of your vents when it is doing this? You could pull the lower trim off under the dash and put your hand on various items to see which one is doing it.

I found it, it's a little fan that was under a small piece that pops off. It still runs when the door opens but it's quieter now.

Re: Car makes humming sound when off Sign In

Aspirator fan motor for the in car temperature sensor. You must have automatic temp control. The little fan is used to draw air over the thermister in the sensor housing. This lets the BCM (body control module) know the temperature inside the car.

Quote
OPERATION The In-Car Sensor will automatically turn on when a vehicle door is opened. If the door is left open, the In-Car Sensor will automatically turn off within approximately 5 minutes. If the door is then closed, but there is no ignition start, the In-Car Sensor will automatically turn off after approximately 2 minutes. After the vehicle has been driven, the In-Car Sensor will turn off immediately when the ignition is turned off. The aspirator motor in the In-Car Sensor operates whenever the ignition switch is on (even when the ATC system off button is pushed). If the In-Car Sensor is open or shorted on this system, the digital display will turn off. Then the system defaults to manual operation.
