Car is shaking - Help Sign In

Hello
I drive a 2002 Honda Accord EX with a V6. I have 186,000 miles on it and the car has been running great. Starting last month, my car start to shake when I do 45-50 mph. I took my car to honda and they said it either my transmission or an axel. I replaced the left axel and it still does the shaking at those speeds. I do not think it can be the transmission because I doesn't happen in only one gear, it happens in all the gears. Several people think it could be a bad tire. I don't want to go out and buy new tires if I don't have to. I am trying to trouble shoot it as best as possible. I bought tires about 15-20,000 miles ago. Any advice? I am taking all suggestions. Thanks in advance

A transmission could do it. There are components in it that move in all gears. What reason did you have for changing the left axle? Was the boot torn? If you suspect tires, try rotating them from to rear and see it the vibration moves with it. If it does, you know what the issue is. I'd rather need tires than a transmission. Try that and let us know what you find.

Honda told me it was either an axel or the transmission. They didn't do really any testing on it besides took it for a spin. Instead of spending an arm and a leg at honda for a new axel, went to a local shop and did it for less. Tried having the ores rotated and rebalanced already. Still does the shaking

How did you decide which axle to change?

They said it feels like the left axel.
Sometimes it worse then other times. It only shakes when your at that speed though

"feels like" isn't always accurate.

I totally agree. Although I am not a mechanic so can only take advice from others. Any recommendations you have? Or any other type of tests you think that should be done. Other mechanics that I have shown the car to swear that it is now the transmission from when they drove it. They said it might be the tires although besides that they don't know what else it could be

Those are what we call "WAGs" (Wild ass guesses). None of them really know and it doesn't sound like your willing to pay someone to look into it sufficiently. Remember, when you walk into a shop and ask for free advice, that is exactly what that advice is worth.

You get what you pay for. I'm guessing most of the "mechanics" who have looked at your car are friends of yours who do some repairs on their own cars. A pro from a transmission shop could determine pretty fast what is causing your troubles here. Its not going to be free.

If you need help, please start a new question of your own. Don't piggy back someone else's.

Re: Car is shaking - Help Sign In

If your at the speed the vibration is occurring and you put the transmission into neutral, does the shaking go away?

Have you tried rotating your wheels to see if the vibration changes or goes away?
