post locked   Car is not working after reverse polarity cable jump start

Year:2003
model: Acura MDX

I forgot to turn off the light of my car and my battery died. So I use a power cable to jump start my car. However it was dark, and I forgot to pay attention to the color of the cable, so I mistakenly connected the + polarity of the cable to the - of the battery, and the - of the cable to the + of battery (inverse polarity).

When I swicth the "power jump starter" to on, the horn turned on (no sparkles were seen) and I immediatly removed the cable. Then I rejumped the car, but this time with the good set up. The car started for about 2 or 3 minutes then died. I tried to jump start again but this time nothing happened.

It was too dark so I did not check the fuses yet. I am waiting for the day time to check on it. What worry me is that the car started then died. Do you think it is just the fuses or can there be a more serious problem?

Also the battery is brand new. I installed a new one just the day before. Also, on the "power jump starter" it indicated that the battery was over 12V. but still the car didnt start or make any noise, no crank, no click, no lights on..

thank you for any suggestion.

You actually may be lucky with this and find the u-bolt connections at the battery are the problem now and have been but didn't notice?

? Interesting description of a jumper box you hook up first and it has a switch for when you are ready. Surprised if it had that it didn't flash or beep that polarity was reversed also?
On those jumper boxes - do know many are REALLY cheap junk with rating way over ability and the clamps just marginal at best. Most should be recharged each use and say so, so do so.

No telling what assorted electrical damage car has sustained but nothing is going to be useful if this now behaves like there's no battery power in it at all points to the car's battery cables right at the battery you just replaced might even be NG showing voltage or not you still don't know if it has amps to deliver - might not?

Hmm so this morning i went to check, and it seems that the battery fuse 120A is fried.

ill try to change it and see if this fix the problem or not

You need to look this over good and make sure no wires got melted together during the initial short as that will continue to blow fuse, if not start a fire.

ok, changed the 120A fuse that was for the battery circuit and everything is working fine now. checked the wires and they look good too. also checked all other fuses, only the radio one was fried, so also changed it.

got lucky. hope nothing bad comes up.

tks for people who answered.

Glad to hear you lucked out. Make sure that never happens again.

I'll close this now as solved.
