Car hesitates / brakes when driving. Brake light flickers. Sign In

Year: 2000
Make/Model: Peugout 206
Engine: 2.0 turbo diesel
Mileage : 100k

As subject. When I am driving it suddenly slows or hesitates (so the accelerator essentially stops working for a second)

Help!?

Guess for now: Feel the wheels if one is hotter than another on same axle. Check brake fluid level now! Make sure parking brake is free and releases fully. For now I think with a flickering brake light this is more of a brake problem than the engine but as said it's guessing so far,

More info:

Basically, I was driving down the dual carriageway on the way home from work today and it kept doing it.
I got off it and on the slip road there was some traffic; a guy in another car shouted at me that my brake lights were flickering.

The hesitation/braking has been happening very sporadically for a couple of days, but today it seems to have gotten worse, so I got straight home and got on here...

Does that help any better?

Better but without being there this is still guesswork but may find the problem. Now I believe you mean the brake lights for cars behind you not one on the dash - right?

That is generally a switch sensing movement of the brake pedal itself which may not be coming all the way back up. Sometimes a bad master cylinder or if a spring is also used to return it to top it could drag brakes. They could get hot and feel like engine doesn't have enough power or get so hot they lose friction and cause erratic braking.

Just trying to find a common denominator that could cause both to happen,

I spoke to a friend and he mentioned that it could well be the brake spring, or perhaps the brake light switch which would affect the ECU.

Are they possible to check myself or would I need to take it into a garage to check them?

Thanks for your help!

Can you pull up more on the brake pedal than where it goes now? Just with your finger can you push just a tad and make the brake lights come on. That would be a clue.

The common denominator if it can't fully return is that the master cylinder wouldn't allow fluid to return to it from the brakes at some point not far from the top of brake pedal travel. If so, just engine heat and heat from a stop or two would expand the fluid in lines, calipers, and wheel cylinders if that style in rear such that brakes are actually applying themselves without you pushing. That's why I asked if wheels were warm/hot. If braking is erratic or you feel a battle - engine vs brakes and aren't doing anything wrong it's possible that could cause both lights to go on AND drag brakes which at first could feel like a hesitation.

Generally and this does happen a wheel or two will get so hot it will smell of overheated brakes. When and if this happens and it's happened to a car on me it won't show up when stone cold usually and get worse as you continue to drive.

It's just a theory for now. Do the checks and if all else fails get help as a brake problem lurking isn't good of course.

I can't think of an engine malfunction that would make brake lights come on which is why I'm leaning towards a brake issue.

Good luck with a fast find and fix,

T

Thanks for your help :)

I got it sorted in the end. It ended up being a fault with the brake which required a new part. The entire thing cost me around £9 ($15) to fix!

Thanks for coming back. If you know what part was the fix it would be good for archives for others with the same problem,

The brake switch and clip needed replacing.

That seems to have fixed both braking and throttle issues in one go, so obviously they were linked.
