Car hangs in park sometime

I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle 2.0 engine with only 17000 miles on it. A few days ago shifter started refusing to shift to drive. Does not happen all the time. I don't believe this but the Ford company tells me there is a small motor that is cutting out and it will only cost $650.00 to install a new motor --say what? The motor probably cost $50.00 and they want to charge me $600.00 to install it. Does anybody have any other ideas as to what is causing this problem?

Well it's more then likely shift interlock actuator, break switch or related wiring
|

I also don't see a procedure for changing shifter interlock solenoid so it might be the whole Transmission selector lever assembly, which would explain why it's expensive.

There is a technical service bulletin out that might address your concern:
TSB 07-1-801/22/07TRANSMISSION SHIFTER BINDING / HIGH EFFORT - BEZEL REPLACEMENT
FORD:2005-2007 Five Hundred, Freestyle
MERCURY:2005-2007 Montego
ISSUE
Some 2005-2007 Freestyle, Five Hundred, and Montego vehicles may exhibit intermittent binding or abnormal high efforts to move the shifter. This may be due to binding, bunching or other restrictions of the shifter slider.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
NOTE
DO NOT REPLACE THE COMPLETE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY FOR BINDING OR ABNORMAL HIGH EFFORTS.
NOTE
PROPERLY DIAGNOSE AND REPLACE ONLY THE BEZEL ASSEMBLY FOR BINDING OR ABNORMAL HIGH LEVER EFFORTS. IF CONDITION IS NOT BEING CAUSED BY BEZEL, PROCEED WITH NORMAL DIAGNOSIS.

Thank you people for the quick replies. The ford mechanic just showed me a schematic of the shifter assembly that showed a small motor that he said was cutting out. Now I wonder how he knew that unless he took the complete shifter assembly out and I don't think he did that in an hour. Anyway how to I find this bulletin that says

Now I wonder how he knew that unless he took the complete shifter assembly out and I don't think he did that in an hour. When diagnosing electrical problems, with the proper tools and training, it isn't necessary to tear a unit down to access a solenoid, motor, etc to check it out. You just need to know where to access the circuit at and to be able to interpret the scope readings....
