Can't Shut Van Door

Very bizarre. Drove my Chevy Astro Van this morning with kids. Came home and unloaded. Went back out this afternoon and realized the passenger side front door was open. Tried to shut it. Won't shut. Where the hole is on the door, where the bolt goes so it will latch, there is a round 'cog' (for lack of a better word). It has flipped around so that it is blocking the hole.
I went over to the driver's side to look at it, fiddled with the cog for just a second, then it flipped up and so now it is blocking the hole, too.
I can't get these 'cogs' to release and come back around and unblock the hole.
2 doors that won't shut! Tried to see if unlocking it with the key would move the cog. It doesn't.
I hope this is making sense, and that there is a solution to my problem.

Ya - kinda think I know what's happening. You need to look for the jaws that clamp that 'cog' as you called it. While holding (may need helper depending on distance) handle to OPEN door try retracting the jaws with something - screwdriver/pencil/whatever such that they are open again to engage that 'cog' or I'll call it the stiker loop in this case.
Happens - kids and adults alike can touch those and cause this. NBD - if it opens right up you should be back in biz.
Also: Good idea to keep a routine of spraying these latches with light lubricant like WD-40 or equivilant,

Such an easy fix! Thank you very much. Van doors are shut now. Hubby won't be mad when he comes home.

Kathy! That's great!
More: With kids and frequent door use especially keep lubing all moving parts - hinges, locks, latches of all kinds. Sliding doors have rollers and guides that like to be lubed up too. Use light stuff as mentioned or risk grease on clothes but spray greases do last longer. That hardware does go bad and you can prevent it for the most part. It's wicked expensive to replace some of that stuff too if worn out!
Glad to hear the good news. Just happened to aging Mother too and that's all it was, (just caught it in coat or something and tripped it)
