1992 Dodge Dakota. Out of nowhere driving at about 30mph and the tach started bouncing all over the dash. Engine started sputtering. Took it out on the highway and the tach was bouncing truck bucking and sputtering and backfiring. Changed out plugs now problem is worse than ever.

look over eng for loose or disconnected connectors ,. check around exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipes for melted wires. How long since a fuel filter change ?

Honestly I dont know when they last changed the filter. Just bought it about 2 months ago. Has been running fine until yesterday. Now I just drove it and it was fine going like up to 45 mph, however when I put it in park it immediately stalls out and have a strong smell of gas now.

Two things come to mind . A with a fuel smell , a shorted injector or a stuck open injector. Neither should cause jumpy tach and such. I still lean towards wiring . A good thing to start with is to have codes checked .Most major parts houses will scan for free.
