Can continuously driving over speed bumps on one tire hurt your axle? Sign In

My school recently installed speed bumps to ensure safe driving. The problem is, they made two bump sections instead of one continuous bump. The bumps are very narrow, so narrow that only one tire makes it on. I wrote my building rep and explained that "Driving a car half-on/ half-off the speed bump is VERY bad for your car and can lead to a bending/cracking of your car's axel." I was told to find proof of that. I've googled and tried ask.com. I truly believe I am right, can you provide me with facts to prove my case?

Please help.

Unfortunately you aren't going to find any supporting evidence for your case. A cars suspension is designed to go over uneven surfaces, holes & bumps. The inner joint on the axle is a plunge type joint (allowing the axle to move in & out while rotating) for this exact reason.

While speed bumps are a PITA, going over one with one wheel is going to hurt anything. The biggest risk of doing some damage would be going over them too fast but then that is the whole purpose of a speed bump (to limit speed), so doing damage due to excess speed would fall back on the driver (unless of course they weren't properly marked and the driver didn't see them)

One thing I will add since I can't see the bumps you are talking about. Some I have seen are crazy tall. I think your only recourse would be to check the building codes of your area and see if there is any codes for size, length & distance for speed bumps. If there is you could check them to see if they are within code and if not then get them changed to something more reasonable (probably wouldn't make you the most popular person with the board) but I doubt you will get them totally removed

If an accident happens I think that's the time the admin will consider your case to the board..That's the worst thing to happen before considering it....

If a speed bump causes an accident, it's not the speed bump at fault, it's the driver. Just slow down and you won't have any problems.

I've always tried to only have one wheel go over speed bumps when I'm able too. I figured this was easier on the suspension, just one shock/spring has to move a whole lot.
