Cable underneath the car on left side? Sign In

Hello. I have a 79 El camino, with a 350 v8 engine if it helps, (Speaking of which, does anyone know what model it can be? SS, Knight rider, or LS or...? The seller didnt know, and I cant find where or how to find out. I can answer more questions about it if neeed), and theres a white cable underneath the left side of the vehicle. Like underneath where I sit. It stretches from the front to the back, and i was just wondering what in the devil it is, if anyone knows? I suspect it could be something to do with the breaking system, but Im really not sure.

Another thing, My car hit a concrete jut in the road that I couldnt avoid in time, and I beleive that it hit that thing, but it may have been something else. Yet, now, it seems that breaking is very difficult. When I first bought that car, breaks where beautifall. Tap it and the car would lurch. But it seemed like the day afterwords, Breaks suddenly got harder to work and I had to push really hard to make it stop suddenly, else it would just slow down gradually. But now, after I hit that thing, I have to press the brakes as hard as I can to slow down, and then harder just to stop. It feels like theres alot of tension, and it seems to spring back up when I let off the pedal, so I was thinking it couuullld be like a blockage in the line for brake fluid somewhere in the hoses hopefully, and thats the reason why it feels like its creating pressure that I have to work against to stop, (because it is). but im not sure really. and I dont know how that could have effected the hydraulics of the hoses when I hit that thing. Unless that white thing is connected somehow... ?

Help would be greatly appreciated. Please and thanks! Cheers

By you’re description I’m thinking that it’s your parking brake cable that you’re seeing hanging?
If by chance when you hit whatever it was, it could have pulled the cable tight and has applied the parking brake and it still maybe partially on due to cables being seized?
The parking brake works mechanically through your rear service brakes, which if they are still applied could account for your poor braking now; due to the rear brake shoes overheating?
My best suggestion would be to have the brakes inspected by your local repair facility. You don’t want to wait on this; how would you feel not being able to stop in an emergency and hurt someone; along with you knowing there was a braking issue with your vehicle?
