CAN'T GET KEY OUT OF IGNITION

Hey folks,
I was in a hurry and jammed my car into park before it had come to a complete stop. Since I have made this stupid mistake the key will not turn all the way back, so I can't get the key out of the key hole. It will not turn back past the ACC point of the ignition. If I leave the key in there I can't lock the electric locks and the battery runs down. Now if I remove the ground from my battery cable then the key turns all the way back and all is good. However, this is beginning to cause my battery to drag and really it is becoming pretty aggravating.
I am sure it is just some safety feature that is causing this, however, I can't afford to take it to the dealership or take it somewhere to have them troubleshoot it for 40 hrs. Doe anyone have any ideas?
