Broken Windsheild Wipers Sign In

I need some tips or directions on how to fix the windshield wipers on a 1996 Oldmobile. We got hit with a snow storm a few days ago, but it started out as rain the day before. I forgot to turn the wipers off on the car from the day that it had rained, so when I started the car up after the snow storm was over the wipers broke because they had become frozen over. At first I hoped that they really didn't break so I removed all the ice, but they won't move at all when I turn them on. Is this an easy fix i can do myself?

People shut their cars off with wiper going all the time and it's a bad habit.

Doesn't usually kill them but not good. Now that they are freed up check fuse for them and even test for power getting to the motor. Can't say anything for sure with a keyboard but you might have burned out the wiper motor, T

Re: Broken Windsheild Wipers Sign In

I can hear the motor huming to the wipers when I turn them on and I still get fluid when I press the window sprayer on, so I know its still getting power through. I do remember hearing a snap in the arms when I turned the car on that day, and I quickly shut the wipers off. They were not on for more that five seconds are so. I'm thinking that most likely the linkage was damaged or broken. But I don't know where to really look at under the hood to tell. Do I have to take the arms off to see the linkage?

OK: It doesn't seem to be electrical but it's still unknown what stripped out or broke just yet.

Try moving the wipers with everything off without going nuts with force. If they move with motor off the next thing is to find out what broke. Could have stripped out the shaft of the motor or the hardware and I don't know how you could tell easily without getting in there and looking. Some are tricky and hide fasteners pretty well, T
