Broke my parking brake.. can I still drive my car? Sign In

Hello all,

Before anything, I tried to find the answer to my question on various websites, but couldn't find an absolute answer to it, so I thought I should try here.

I was trying to tighten my parking brake earlier today, and thought I knew what I was doing (obviously I didn't), and after tightening the bolt too much, the bolt broke and the parking brake cable got loose.
So now that I lost my parking brake, I was wondering if I could still drive my car safely for the week end (I don't have a backup car and need to go places) before I get it fixed on Monday.
Also, I am wondering if the fact that i lost my parking brake will affect my front and rear brakes. Are they still working just fine? I drove my car around the block and it seems fine, but it may act differently when going 60mph on the freeway, so before doing anything stupid, I wanted to check here.

My car is an automatic, so I can park it just fine by putting it in parking, my concern is really driving it somewhere.

Thank you so much in advance for your time and opinions.

Most parking brks use the rear brks & they are mechanically activated to hold the car....They are not used in the normal frt & rear brking while driving....That system is hydraulic..... So you haven't hurt your primary system..

In the future, when you take on any project...It's best to research it before you jump in....

In this case, most of the time when the prk brk won't hold any more it's usually the rear shoes getting out of adjustment & not in the cable. A simple rear brk adjustment probably would've brought back your prk brk and even made your brk pedal feel a little higher during normal brking while you are driving...

Thank you so much Sidom for your Feedback!

That's exactly what the problem was to begin with: my parking brake was totally ineffective, to the point I could drive for miles without noticing it was on...
I didn't know it had to do with the rear shoes, so I'll definitely get that checked out too first thing on Monday.

Pretty tough to tell you anything about your car if we don't even know what kind of car it is.

Is #2 where you were adjusting it?

Yes I was tightening #2 (on the top right picture) until it broke...

OK, sounds like you broke the cable. Regular brakes should be normal.
