Brakes pulsating when applied on 99 Taurus Sign In

Hello, lately the brakes on the 99 Taurus have been pulsating somewhat and just don't feel right. I will be replacing the pads soon because they are worn, but I was wondering if there is a way to check minimum thickness on the brake rotor other than with vernier calipers? Or is that basically the only way? Thank you for any suggestions

I f you are doing your own brakes , after removing the calipers take the rotors off and take to a parts house or machine shop . They will measure and machine if safe .

I wouldn't advise having them machined even if there is enough left. My experience has shown me that once a driver has caused rotors to distort and warp, if they are resurfaced, it will come back even faster. The only way to get rid of it for any period of time is to replace the rotors. They are so much cheaper these days that it's not worth messing with having them cut. This is something that is usually the result of driver habits and it will likely happen again.

We turn rotors here every day. Usually get about 20k from a set of pads and rotors usually last as long as the pad. But again, we pay about 110$ for a rotor.

I have replaced rotors in the past on other cars because the shop said they were bad and needed replacement, however I wanted to check these first, so I guess I will get the calipers and see what the thickness is against the specs. I will be replacing them myself to save labor charges. I thank you much for the information you've given me, as always good information

Don't misunderstand my advice. i am not against turning rotors, only rotors that already started pulsating. That indicates that the brakes are being used aggressively and a thinner rotor will have less resistence to that. The problem will only return even faster than the first time.

I understand, and I'm not sure as to how long these rotors have been on there, probably a long time. I'm sure they need replacing, but I was going to check the minimum thickness against the specs to make sure

Re: Brakes pulsating when applied on 99 Taurus Sign In

As long as the rotors aren't grooved you can check them with calipers to check min specs. The min is .974" in case you don't have them.

I'm with HT on the rotors, it's been my experience once a rotor gets warped, the pulsation comes back. Not 100% but enough where I definitely cover myself so I'm not doing it for free a few months later when the new rotors were declined. Those particular ones you only have about .045" to work with, they are @ 1.020" new, so if the warpage is bad enough, they go under just trying to get them true.......
