Battery is Dying Sign In

New battery. After jump start, alternator reads 14 v and battery reads about 14v. When I kill the engine, the voltage starts dropping almost like a timer. 12.98, 12.97, 12.96.... In a matter of a few minutes, it's too low for the car to restart. If i disconnect the battery from the car, it holds it's charge just fine. Is there deffinetly something drawing current, or is there a possibility that the battery just needs a good charge? This car sits most of the week. I start it once a week for about 5 minutes and the battery reads proper voltage as soon as it is started.

Suggestions???

Re: Battery is Dying Sign In

Voltage will read 14 or so when running. It will if normal return slowly to about 12.2 when car is off for a while.

To check for a drain disconnect neg bat terminal and connect a test light with everything off an no hood light on. It should not light up. If it does something is drawing current. Next would be to pull fuses until light goes out and at least you know that is the problem circuit.

Also note: Even new batteries can be bad and they don't like constantly being discharged. Good luck with the project, T

Do I hook up the test light from the disconnected neg cable to the pos terminal?

NO -- You hook up between disconnected cable and neg battery post. Sorry if I was confusing, T

no from the neg cabel to the neg side of the battery --as long as you have a bright light you have a draw ie: open the door - or turn on the key--walah bright light
