The other day I took my car to my mechanic because the engine had problems turning over. The mechanic said my battery was dead and he installed a new one. Later that day I drove about 25 miles. Towards the end of my trip, the battery icon on the dashboard lit up. A few minutes later my car shut off in the middle of a heavily trafficked highway. I had it towed back to the mechanic. The next morning they told me the alternator needed to be replaced. Shouldn't that mechanic have checked the alternator when he replaced my battery earlier that day? In very technical language, they told me there was no reason to check it. That does not make sense to me.

Yes, they definitely should have tested the charging system before and after replacing a battery.
