Can anyone help me here? I have a sports car that I only drive at weekends for about 200 miles per weekend. Does anyone know if I might have battery problems with this usage? The car is always in a garage. Will this affect the life of the battery? Should I do anything to the battery during the week? They have a voltage sensor that will monitor the state of charge and turn on and off automatically. The biggest reason for having it hard wired in is for the ease of use; no opening the hood, connecting cables, just plug it into an extension cord and walk away. In your case a week isn’t all that long for a battery to sit but you will lengthen the battery’s life by keeping it fully charged between uses. Here’s one style; I don’t mean to recommend this particular one. It just happens to be the one I found doing a quick google search. I probably hold the world's record for buying new batteries as I own too many vehicles and really only use one!! I do ok with vehicles that do get used at least once a week but not with some others. One is 6V pos ground and I've never seen a maintainer for that one that is automatic. I've owned that vehicle since 1964 and never got more than two years out of a battery but with a jump would run all day till you shut it off and you are on your own. Comment: Batteries like to be clean?? Sounds stupid but they drain from one post to the other and you can see this with an ohm meter. Dry dirt doesn't usually cause a problem but if damp or even fully wet it will.
