BRAKE LIGHT ON INSTRUMENT CLUSTER Sign In

2001 Dodge Stratus 2.4 ltr dohc sedan over 160,000 miles.
The "brake" light on my dash comes on with a ding-ding about 30 seconds after the engine is started. The pads / calipers / master cylinder and brake fluid all look fine and I adjusted the parking brake. What else makes this come on?

Re: BRAKE LIGHT ON INSTRUMENT CLUSTER Sign In

Assuming the charging light isn't on, but if the alternator's regulator turns on the charging system light, the brake warning indicator will come on too.

If the brake warning lamp is on and the charging lamp is off, there are two circuits that can cause this to occur. One is the circuit that runs to the parking brake switch. If the switch is closed when the parking brake is off or the circuit is shorted to grounded, that will cause the warning lamp to come on.

The other circuit would be the brake master cylinder level switch circuit. If the switch is grounding the circuit because the brake fluid is low, the switch is stuck closed, float is stuck down, or the circuit is shorted to ground that will cause the lamp to come on too.

When the brake warning lamp is illuminated start diagnosing this by disconnecting the master cylinder level switch connector. See if the lamp goes out. If it goes out, you need to replace the master cylinder level switch/reservoir. If it doesn't go off, come back here for more information.

The problem was the level switch. Thanks for the help; you're the best!
