BMW E60 2008
525D 3.0 145kw
210k km

So I moved recently which means I couldnt take my car to my trusted mechanic and I had to find a new one at my new location. Since it was regular service (engine oil and all the filters (air, fuel, oil) and i was in a bit of a rush I asked around from new co workers and found what seemed a decent place thinking I ll have time to find a new better permanent place after.

So to start off with the problem.. I’ve owned the car for over a year now and it has ALWAYS started almost instantly max 1-2sec when i press the start engine button even in -25C. Including after all the previous services i’ve had done on it (3 oil changes along with all the filters). But when I went to get the car after the oil change today, it took like 5-6 seconds of engine turning before the car started. I stopped the engine and tried again and it started in like 2-3sec so i was like okey maybe its normal. I drove home (only about 3km) and did some reading and found out it could be caused by air in fuel system after the fuel filter change?

I also tried starting again after a few hours and although it was not as bad it still took like a good 3-4 sec to start the engine which is not normal for my car. So i popped the hood and checked if i could see anything wrong but i know very little about cars.. although there seemed to be some oil possibly leaking under the righthand side of the engine or it could have spilled maybe..

Anyways should I be worried and if so what could be the problem?

Sorry if text is confusing, english is not my first language.

What it sounds like, is the fuel pressure is bleeding off in the lines after the car shut off. A good way to test this would be to turn the car on without starting it for a couple of seconds, Do this 2 or 3 times, And then try to start the car.
If the engine starts right up, that is your problem.
It may or may not be related to the service , but that is the area that would have to be looked at. If a fuel filter was changed then obviously you would look at the connections to make sure there's no small leak.

The pictures are of the oil filter housing so if they pulled the oil filter from that housing it would be dripping oil. A reputable shop would have cleaned all that oil off after the job to confirm the oil filter isn't leaking.

I would bring it back to them and at least ask them to clean up the oil mess with some brakkleen and mention the problem you are having so they can look over their work for anything they could have left disconnected.

Thanks for the reply.
Tried this, it seemed to start somewhat better, i’ll just let it sit overnight and see how the cold start goes next morning and go from there.

Thanks.
Honestly I have a sour taste from that place so I’ll rather just take it somewhere else and have them look over it if the problem presists.
I uploaded a video, cleaned it up slightly with a rag but it was worse before, covered in oil. What is that part thats covered in oil (under the hose) and could the leak be from there also? I understand that the oil filter housing is just above it and the oil dripped from there most likely since the hose is also covered but just wondering.
Sorry for being a dummy ;)

The part below the housing is a motor mount so definitely no oil leaking from that. That is all oil coming from the filter housing.

It was most likely just a sloppy oil change but keep an eye on it for the next few days as there is a "O" ring for the cover that they removed and it could be leaking. They should have cleaned off the oil and checked for that.

You have to do what makes you feel comfortable. As HT has already stated, they just did a sloppy job by not cleaning up. Well doing a messy job doesn't mean it wasn't done correctly, It can lead to some confidence issues. But throw in this pressure issue and it might not be a bad idea to get a 2nd opinion.

This is an intank fuel filter, so if it's leaking at least it's leaking inside the tank but It does need to be sealed properly.

Alright will keep an eye on that and the long engine start for a few days and take it to someone thats hopefully more professional next time.
I’ve got no one to ask about this stuff so it’s really cool that you guys are helping people like me here.
Much appreciated, thanks! :)

will keep updated until i get it solved

Yeah deffo agree, if it were only some spilled oil I wouldn’t make a fuss though it does leave a negative impact. But the presumed pressure issue causing the long start makes me not want to take my car back there even to have them fix it. I want to take my car only some place where I can be confident it doesnt come back to me with more issues then when i took it there. Have some prior experiences with that over and over when i first got the car… Granted everyone makes mistakes but already not cleaning up the oil leaves a bad impression and having other issues.. yeah..

Trying for you Keyro. Note to others this is a "diesel." Just that fuel at about -12, -15F (blame me so US minded don't do Celsius) is cold for petrol or gas too is slower.

Spot of an "oil" stain/spilled or whatever could be diesel if cold has to be heated, that cold some forgiveness.

Not popular HERE for cold weather especially if outdoors without heating the fuel or special additives.

Just noting this issue with that fuel and temps there's a new other (family owned) that's troubles had to seriously garage it in to up the temperature then runs fine.

Forgive me please I don't and never did specialize or study diesels as they were too much fuss for where I am was -12F last Winter is within norms for me/area.

IDK for you just the products and know a battery of any type is much less powerful if the same temp extreme.
You moved to this IDK how well garaged or outside and matters how long engines hold heat if run the prior day at the most some help,

Tom

That is most likely the fuel line still having some air in it. That will pretty much bleed out on it's own just running the engine. They probably just didn't run the car long enough after changing the filter. Again, just a sloppy job.
