BADDD OLD CLUTCH!!! 92 Escort 1.9 5spd Sign In

I bought a very clean 92 Ford Escort LX Wagon (1.9 5spd 98,000 miles) from a little old lady. Body is straight.(the car)and the air blows cold. It was garage kept and had not been started for a year or so. Dropped a fresh battery in it and it fired up smooth and quiet. I was pretty impressed with it and gave 400 bucks for it knowing the clutch was out. I need a spare ride like this to be a often needed back up for the wife and kids. Since the little car was so clean I have big hopes to get it rolling on the cheap. So since there is no big hurry I want to educate myself and and tackle the job in the drive with my big box of genuine imported chinese tools. I chained the little car home behind the wife in my pickup screaming at her all the way. She still does not get it that I would do the stopping. Made it home anyway with both bumpers in pretty fair condition. Jacked the Escort up and put it in gear. With the weight off of it, the wheels will turn in forward and reverse o.k. No ugly noises noted. The trans-axles and boots seem to be good. Should I consider any R&R on them while I have it torn down? I do have an A Frame and thought I would try to get the car in the air with it. It's my understanding that I'll need to drop the motor down to get at the cluth repair. O.K. I'm going to give it a try. I need all the advise and fair warning I can get as this is a little past my experiance level. Where can I look at diagrams on the internet. Are there parts choices I should know about? I had hoped to get a little smarter about what to expect and what to look out for before I tackle the job. Your help and advise will be appreciated. THANKS!!! Steve (gstephenflora@yahoo.com)

Steve - too funny -- should have bought a gay car! Just kiddingCrazy

The others here may have more specific and detailed stuff for you for the project. Autozone may have stuff via AllData.com enough to get thru the job if the "Genuine Chinese" tools hold out. Many tools are rent-able for free with full deposit.

Suggest getting the whole clutch pack/set. Do it once and right like most things.

If you really want tons of info at your beck and call for the specific car you can purchase WWW.AllDataDIY.com (we have no affiliation with them) for on line manuals. I doubt VERY much the paperbacks will be enough to do this well the first time.

Think hard about this job vs just paying for it. You'll need more than basic sets of tools, jacks and more.

BTW - teach the wife how the tow trick works first - saves on needing two bumpers! LMAO,

T

Re: BADDD OLD CLUTCH!!! 92 Escort 1.9 5spd Sign In

Thanks Tom! I might have exagerated a little about the little wife and her towing ability. Did I mention that she works with me driving her own class 8 off-road oil field truck? She is actually a 5'4" 125lb cutie and has been doing a great job in the field for about 5 years. It only took about 10 years for me to figure out the secret to success in marriage.(Your right. I'm wrong. I'm sorry dear.) Hehh, hehh, She goes for it every time, as long as she still has the check book in her purse. We did stretch on the chain a little, but all in all made the trip o.k. I do have a few decent tools and can probably borrow from buddies that are better equipped. AllDataDIY sounds like the right idea. I'll check it out. I can get some local help/advise, but I want to be semi-unstupid before I start mouthing off to anyone! This project may not go so fast (I've got a lot on my plate) but I will endevour to perservere. I'll let you know how it goes later...that's a promise. Thanks again! STEVE
