Axle nut on 1993 Lumina won't break loose Sign In

The axle nut on the front passenger side of my Lumina refuses to budge. The engine has been taken out and when I try to break this axle nut loose the tires on the front turn while on the garage floor. My wife has held the brakes down with her feet while holding the steering wheel to keep it from turning. This is a 1993 Chevy Lumina sedan with a 3.1 L engine VIN T. I used a 3/4 inch breaker bar with a 3 ft cheater pipe over the handle. I also sprayed nut and axle with Blaster penetrating fluid and let it soak overnight. Thanks for your replies. DCooke

You need a very strong impact gun.

I get quite a few of these that even a good 1/2 inch gun won't break loose. I have a 3/4 inch gun in my set that does well, but you need a 1/2 inch hose and a big compressor to feed it enough air. You may have to heat the nut with a torch, but realize your wheel bearing likely won't like the heat.

It's no surprise that it won't come loose the way he is trying. It needs impact or it with just turn the wheel.

Well I haven't been in this situation before but I guess since the wheel is spinning I would try to find a bar I could put thru one of the holes in the rim and brace it on a control arm or some piece that isn't going to get damaged.....I'd get a helper to hold the other end of the bar, put the wife back on the brk & steering wheel, find a 10 ft cheater bar and make sure everyone is clear if some thing breaks....

If that won't pop it then you are going to have to take the steering knuckle off, pop the axle out of the tranny (if it's still in the van) and cut it off....Obviously you are going to need a new axle & bearing....

I'm guessing he doesn't have an impact. If you can put your breaker bar on it again, try to beat on the end of the bar with a large hammer. Its the closest to the vibrating action of an impact you will get without one. Might bust it loose. Watch yourself when you do it, things that aren't perfectly lined up will make that bar come flying off and leave nasty bruises.

The air gun ,as HT has mentioned is the preferred method I have a "hump back " model which claims 650 ft lbs in reverse. Perhaps you can rent one or if car is drivable go to a local shop and offer 5-10 dollars for them to loosen it ,then snug it back to get home. A strickly back yard idea , that i have done on balancer bolts is to place socket/bar on bolt add cheater .Have only affected wheel jacked up , position bar about 6" from ground so that when car is started in neutral , then dropped into gear, wheel turns the bar and it will strike ground and the torque of the wheel will loosen nut... I have seen it happen ...But you did not hear it from me.BE CAREFULL

In the first post he mentioned the engine has been pulled RT. Otherwise I would've advised like you have to just drive it to a shop and get someone to break it loose with their gun for him. Neat idea with the cheater pipe using the engine. Certainly would need to use caution but it would work were you in a bind.

This is why I have an IR 261 gun in my arsenal. If it can change the tires on a Mack truck there isn't a CV shaft that is safe.

To keep the axle from turning you could remove the wheel and shove a fat pin punch in between the rotor fins wedged against the brake caliper.
