Alternator test for 2001 Ford Taurus Sign In

Hello all, I heard what I thought was bearing failure in my water pump, so I replaced it. Come to find out the noise is still there, so now I believe it's the alternator. I should have known better but went on gut feeling and now was wondering if there is a particular test for the alternator that I can do? I'm fairly certain I will replace it, but thought I could check it anyway. I checked battery voltage with Fluke multimeter and shows 12 volts so all is ok there. Can you please help me with this or should I just go on and replace it? One other thing, how do I tell what amps it has so I will be able to get the correct replacement? Thanks for your help

If you are just trying to verify the noise before replacing the alt a good trick you can do is to get a long thin piece of metal ( I use a 3' extension) and put one end on the alt & listen thru the other end to see if you can hear the noise.

You can also check other accessories & idler pulleys. With the Idlers you have to use care because they are spinning but the mounting bolt isn't and that is where you carefully need to put the extension to listen.

Thanks so much for the information, that trick did work. I pretty much figured it was the alternator because of the squalling noise coming from that vicinty, originally I thought the water pump but that was not the problem. That really does work, I could tell right away. Thanks again
