Almost Crashed!! Please help! 2000 Acura Integra LS

Getting on the freeway this morning my RPMs starting increasing even after taking my foot off the gas pedal. I couldn't push my break pedal all the way down, my breaks were barely slowing me down. I put my car in neutral to pull over but my RPMs just shot up. I turned off the engine while still moving and was able to break and pull over. With my engine off and car in Park i turned my engine back on after a minute, My RPMs shot up as high as possible. I turned off the my car and tried again with the same result. Several minutes later I turned on my car this time while pumping the gas pedal...the RPMs normalized and I was on my way, everything working fine.
Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to fix this? It seemed pretty dangerous what was happening.
My car is a 2000 Acura Integra LS. (automatic transimission).

Did you have cruise control engaged? Have you inspected the throttle cable and throttle blade for binding? Carpet mat getting caught up in the accelerator pedal?
You should have it checked out by your mechanic. You may not get so lucky next time.

no cruise control engaged, I did check if something was caught under the accelerator pad and there was nothing. I did not inspect the throttle cable and blade. What should i be checking for with the throttle cable and blade? I'm very new to car repair.

!! Just add to what DS said so well to do:
* If cruise - then do brake lights work? If not that's the normal shut off for cruise no matter what else fails.
Just for a record. ALL - no exception so far and hope none ever throttles with cables that didn't return to idle were frayed cable right at throttle body and could be seen moving it by hand or a helper pushing gas pedal to floor with ENGINE OFF.
I hear you loud and clear and this is unacceptable till known fixed and a problem absolutely found,

Honestly, if you don't know what your looking at or what to look for, you should have you mechanic take a look at it.

Do you have a friend of family member that is knowledgeable about vehicles? This is going to be a visual inspection. We can't point out what you should be looking for if you don't even know what your looking at. You're really putting yourself and everyone else on the road at risk if you don't find and correct whatever is causing the throttle to hang. I'm sure the cost to have your mechanic look at it and repair the issue is cheaper than the insurance deductible, the price of another vehicle, or court costs. An unattended acceleration problem is a major safety issue and needs to be checked out by a professional and not someone that has no experience with automotive systems and repair .
