Ford Dealer wants $300. to install...can I do it myself or should I take it to a mechanic? It's a 5.4 V-8 in an F-250.

Not really sure what part you are talking about (probably my fault) but if you mean the check valve to the air pump into the exhaust they can be a real pest! They get real stuck and you can easily end up breaking stuff and so can the techs but they will have more tools to get out of that jam.

Just curious - What are the symptoms of the problem you are trying to fix? T

Thanks, Tom. I think this part is also known as the air idle control valve. The truck sometimes won't idle unless you keep giving it gas....this happens more often when starting but can also happen at red lights, etc. Anyway, I paid to have it put on the dealer's computer & this is the culprit. I'm not much of a mechanic but change my own oil & have replaced plenty of parts over the years. HOWEVER, if this is a complicated replacement I don't want to tackle it. I just thought maybe the dealer was being piggish.

Wish I knew more about this part and problem for you. Here's some thoughts to help you decide what to do:

*Price out the part and take a look at it at an independant parts place. It might be an expensive part but might just take a couple screws or bolts to put it in. A friendly store will let you take the part out and compare it with your old one.

* If it's a Ford only part that will be difficult. If so go look at their screen and it will show the basic idea of how it goes in. A dealer's parts dept won't discount parts but they do a little for the trade. If you have to order a part you probably won't be able to return it and most items electrical No place will take back if you touched it.

* Some chain parts stores will do a code scan for free.!!

* $300 for this item sounds high but I can't say for sure.

Good luck with the fix and let us know, T

The difficulty of replacing the valve depends on where it's located. If it's on top of the intake, it's a snap. If it's down behind the manifold, it's a b****. If there's an engine cover, remove it and look for a shiny cylindrical object about four inches long and an inch or so in diameter. It'll have a wiring harness attached and is held in place by two machine screws with 5/16" or 8mm heads.

Thanks to all. I have the part. Ford wanted $100. for a Motorcraft but I got a generic (Airtex) for less than $50. The $300. was the labor only quote. It's either a nightmare to replace or their fee is ridiculous. Could this possibly be a four hour job?

This is evidently a very common problem with Ford engines (not just the 5.4's) by about year 4 or 5 (mine is a 2000 & the problem started about 6 months ago). If your Ford intermittantly has trouble idling properly I would strongly suspect this part.

I doubt this could be a four hour job. Have you checked with an independant shop about this? Sorry again that I can't help more. I don't see many vehicles less than 10 years old and most folks I know buy these super extended warranties so I'll never see it. I avoid full size trucks as my shop it kind of tight and try to do work outdoors in better weather. See what an independant shop has to say. They will want to use their own parts and mark them up to retail price. Some will use yours. I want to know how you make out with this as I'll probably have to replace one someday. - T
