I recently changed the oil in my wife's '08 RAV4 after an exactly 1 year/15k mile run on AMSOIL 0W20 Signature Series oil claimed to be able to run 1 year or 25k miles. I put the AMSOIL in on 1/1/11 and changed it on 1/1/12 and the mileage was almost exactly at 15k miles. The oil was a bit browned, but nothing like what I see at work changing oil all day in vehicles people have let go 15k miles on conventional oils or even synthetic oils with the crappy FRAM filter!
However, our RAV4 was showing about 1/4 qt. to 1/3 qt. low on the dipstick when I checked it right before it got changed. Yes, it was parked on a level surface and engine was cool and not running when checked. Just in case you may have thought I was an idiot, haha! It's a certified used Toyota and has no leaks and doesn't burn any oil that I know of(unless this indicates that it does).
So, my question is:
Is this a normal breakdown of the 0W20 AMSOIL, or should I be concerned with the motor burning oil?

I'm afraid anyone going 15K between oil changes is doing severe damage to their engine. I don't care what kind of nonsense the oil company is claiming.

If you had not checked your oil since the last change, then your oil level being down 1/3 to 1/4 on the stick isn't really a big thing. All engines burn oil and that much oil being burnt in 15K would probably be considered normal.

Oh really? Why don't you go ask the manufacturer if they will honor your new car warranty if you go 15K between intervals, instead of the 7K they required. All these claims are just that ..... claims.
I will admit that synthetic oils are higher quality but the change intervals remain the same.

No longer have "new car warranty" since it's a 2008, sir. It does have a 7 year/100k mile powertrain warranty however. Also, under law they cannot deny to repair your vehicle unless it is specifically related to oil failure.
Also, if you reply to someone's post it shouldn't be in a condescending manner in which you just bash the person for what they are doing. I think if I were to show up at your shop I'd probably be heading right back out the door since you would most likely try and floss your ego by putting me down for going 15k miles on an oil change.
Another possibility is that you own a shop or rely on oil changes to pay the bills and you would rather people throw out perfectly good oil so that they can come back every 3000 miles or whatever their manufacturer recommends in order to make more money. Maybe that's not the case, but you don't need to put someone down for trying something different. Maybe you should try putting some hard facts in your replies instead of just saying I'm wrong.
And to answer the question of asking Toyota if they will honor the warranty, I already have and they said there would be no problem with using AMSOIL in my vehicle as far as the warranty was concerned. AND, the "Toyota recommended" oil change interval on my vehicle is 5k miles, not 7k.

Look on YouTube for "Fram oil filters" or something similar and you will get several videos of cut-open oil filters. Unfortunately I used Fram on my vehicle for several years, but never again! The end pieces on the filter are made from paper, even on the "Tough Guard" and "higher end" Frams. This includes all filters manufactured by Fram as well, such as MicroGuard. There are other filters they make as well, but that's the only one I can think of at the moment. I'll be using a Purolator PureOne on my truck for the rest of it's service.
