ABS self-test noise when startup, depending on wheel direction Sign In

2005 Toyota Fortuner(same with Hilux) D4D 3.0L Diesel, 147k odo

For the past 3 years, I have been experiencing this "clunking/whirling/bearing like noise" for around 1-2seconds when ABS self-check engages. NO check engine light, No code error. No ABS light error.

Sometimes, noise is very minimal, sometimes a little strong, sometimes very very strong.

I made a quick picture on what scenarios ABS engage with noise, and when ABS engage is quiet. these different case scenarios when ABS do self test on startup when reaching 10kph.

t happens ONCE every startup.. (ABS known to self-test on the very first time it hits certain KPH,MPH), and after the quick noise, I can travel 1000km or unlimited mileage without hearing that sound, the next time I can only hear it when I turn off my car, and turn it on and hitting the first 10KPH mark where ABS does the self-check in. Have no idea why the ABS keeps doing that, or maybe it is not the ABS that is making noise...

And the pulsating noise, concides with my brakes pulsating as well, so I am pretty sure,my guess of ABS giving noise is around 95%..

We don't have that vehicle here in the US by I can tell you that the ABS does not test with the vehicle moving. It may run a test but that will be within 2 seconds of the key being turned on.

What you may be experiencing is a false activation due to a faulty sensor that is reading inaccurately during low speed braking and the computer sees that as a brake lockup and then activates ABS on that wheel. You will need a professional scan tool to find that..

We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Ok, thanks for your inputs.

I guess also that it could be faulty sensors triggering something.

There is no ABS lights ON as of this moment, but could be weak sensors triggering it.

ABS test/scan tools are quite rare,so I'll try to check.
