ABS activating at low speeds, dry pavement

ABS activating at low speeds, dry pavement Sign In

2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 Auto 4wd 179,xxx miles

this problem has been getting progressively worse and has me stumped I have to admit.

When I am coming to a full stop such as at a STOP sign or pulling into parking spaces, the ABS activates. It is usually in the last few feet of the stop and less than 5 MPH.

The ABS light is not on in the dash. It is working however because I can see the light cycle through its test when ignition is turned on.

I have no bearing noise and cant get any play from the hub assembly.

Look at the front wheel speed sensors. Check for rust jacking. If the sensor is being jacked up from rust underneath it will cause your problem. Clean the rust off the bottom of the sensor where it seats on the hub bearing and the surface of the hub bearing.

Make sure there is no slop in the wheel bearing either.

Hammertime,

i tried with the truck in the air grabbing the wheel at the 3 & 9 oclock position and also the 12 & 6 to see if i could get any movement but was none. I also tried with the wheel and brake components off the hub but got no movement and the hub rolled smoothly. Is there any other way to verify the bearing?

What's actually happening is one of the sensors is reading inaccurately at low speeds and activating the ABS because the ABS sees it as a brake locking up. It may be rust or exciter ring damage as DS suggests or it may be a bad sensor. If you have a good scan tool you should be able to look at frame by frame speed data to see the bad one.

ok cool i follow you now. and actually im jumping back and forth between the garage and here and ill end up having to put a new sensor in because when i tried to wiggle the original one out of the bore in the hub, the sensor seperated from itself

Do you already know which wheel is causing it?

UPDATE Sign In

hey guys, sorry it took so long but i finally finished up installing the two new front abs wheel sensors. I cleaned the mating surface to make sure there was no rust jacking while it was out.

long story short, the abs pulsing has gotten alot better but has not fully gone away. Before it happened all the time at slow roll stops. Now it only does it when the steering wheel is turned to the left.

i hate to throw parts at the problem, but it is hard to focus in on the problem because i am not getting any fault codes.

Any ideas guys?

Ok believe it or not I finally got around to having the truck scanned at my local shop. They search for any fault codes but none were stored. The mechanic then rode around with me while live scanning the wheels.

He said the rear sensor is dropping to 0 just prior to the ABS activating. So he recommended changing the rear sensor.

He may be right. Just make sure it's not a problem with the sensor wiring or the reluctor wheel it reads from. Probably going to end up being a sensor.

well it wasnt the rear sensor. so as of now i still dont have any ABS fault codes and i have new sensors on both front and on the rear end. Im guessing now that it must be a broken tone ring on the front bearings. I think im going to take a guess and tackle the front left bearing since the truck has a substantial pull to the right when braking. Its just frustrating because there is no codes and the live scan tool cant find it either.

The odd thing was the mechanic said the rear sensor was dropping to 0 just prior to the abs symptoms. Im assuming the rear sensor just feeds off the ring gear in the differential?

until i get this sorted out i think im going to just pull the fuse for the ABS and run standard brakes for now

Yes, there is a tone ring mounted to the ring gear. Those rear sensors go all the time.

So hammer, you think the tone ring on the ring gear is F**D up? that doesnt sound like it would be fun to replace. Might be easier just swapping in a used rear lol

No, I've never see that happen. You need to go back to the scanner and see what it's doing now.

Turns out it was a bad front left wheel hub assembly.
