ABS Kicking In on 2002 Silverado1500 Sign In

2002
Chevy
Silverado 1500
4.3L V6

The problem: I am driving my truck and when I slow down, mostly to park, the brakes don't kick in immediately and then the ABS system kicks in.

I have not tried anything yet except to check the brake fluid level and it is at max, although it does look a little dirty. When the truck is stopped the brake pedal is tight, I can only depress it an inch or two. When the truck is running it brakes normal, even at stops or red lights (EXCEPT FOR WHEN THE ABS KICKS IN), however when stopped I can push the pedal all the way to the floor with no problem. As soon as I turn the engine off the brake pedal than becomes tight again and I can only depress it an inch or two.

The problem is not hydraulic. It's electrical. The ABS module is getting an incorrect speed reading from one of the wheels at low speeds for some reason and interprets that as a lock up. This can be a bad sensor, bad wheel bearing, wiring problem or they also had a lot of problem with the exciter rings rusting or cracking. You really need a professional scan tool that can capture a movie of all the ABS data at the moment this happens. That will identify which wheel is doing it.

A simple scan isn't going to tell you anything because it won't likely set a code. You have to monitor the sensor data for ABS during the failure. You have to use the movie feature so it will capture frame by frame to play back. It just doesn't update the info fast enough to see the speed glitch watching live data.
Inspecting the sensors may show something also.
