99 volvo emissions message and sputtering

I have a 99 Volvo S80 6 cyl. 2.5litre engine with automatic transmission: while driving to church one evening the car drove fine down the road once I stopped i noticed the emmissions service message was on and the car was sputtering. What could this problem be? I have also noticed that since this occured the car burns way more gas than usual and it doesnt sputter while driving only when stopped. Any advice on this problem would be greatly appreciated

With service light on a code reading would have info stored. Get a good code reading now. It probably won't tell you exactly what to do but lead to the problem area,
