I have a 99 Saturn sl1 1.9L , 270k miles, i have been having problems with it dying at random times. It is a 5 speed. I will drive it somewhere And turn it off and within min. Go to restart it and it is dead. Turn the key the lights and everything turns on but it will not turn over, there is no clicking or grinding at all. Try to jump start it but that does not work, but I can push start it and throw it into gear and it starts right up. It did that for a whIle and i would have to push start everywhere. I started using 91 octane and it stops dying everywhere and starts with no problem. We replaces the fuel filter and did a system cleaner on it thinking that will help, it worked for a while then started dying again!

This sounds like a no crank instead of stalling or dying.

If the engine is cranking, which means the starter motor isn't working, you need to diagnose a no crank situation.

That means checking battery cable connections, the battery itself, and the starter motor.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Battery is new and all the cables are connected properly. How do i tell if its a crank situation? It doesn't have problems when we use 91 octane? And it will start if push started

What you are explaining is it will NOT crank, turn the engine at all with no noises while trying. That doesn't have diddle to do with what fuel is in it or none at all.

Connections all along - new battery or not re-check there and along the cables to starter and engine block. If good or check before if trigger wire at starter has power and good connection while key turned to "crank" position and go from there,

First see if the little trigger wire at the starter solenoid lights a test light when key turned to "start" and if nothing you ignition isn't sending along the request for it to crank. Neutral safety switch possible on automatics or clutch switch on standards.

If trigger wire does light and starter doesn't make a sound try tapping on it out of harm's way - if it starts right up that starter is near certainly no good.

Other tests for voltage drop along cable wires. You've been playing with fuel things that are not involved with whether the engine will crank or not so any changes are just coincidental. This is near certainly a connection problem. It can only be as good as the weakest link battery to starter which is grounded to engine and back via cable to battery,
