99 oldsmobile aurora check battery charging system.well first of all my antenenna got jammed, but the antenna motor kept running draining my battery. this happened about five times in one week. i got fed up and parked the car for the last six months. i recently started doing some work on it (new rad, water pump, and battery). the first thing i did was disconnect the antenna motor as to not drain the new battery. i got a good deal on a tested refurbished battery slightly smaller than the original. after about five mins of sitting at idle the computer started flashing "check charging system". i am not sure if this is due to the slightly smaller battery or if my alternator needs replacement. i dont really want to do both, as both are just over 200 dollars each and i just sunk a bunch of unexpected money into it. any advice would be appreciated.

You're probably going to regret buying that junk battery but your current problem is likely an alternator, although it could be anything in the charging circuit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

they did test battery for me and it comes with warranty. the car uses a 79 and i got a 78. not sure what that means, or if it would be the cause. but previously the electronics was the only thing on this car not giving me a headache

this car and its damn computer are totally out of my league. i bought someones problem for what i thought was a good deal. i just want to fix it so i can sell it without feeling like i am rippin someone else off. is my best option to take it to a shop and get them to test it, or is that a pricey procedure. thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

Getting this all diagnosed by a shop shouldn't be that bad and better than wasting $$ on things you don't need - go for it. Ask how much to check it out and if up to it, you can still do the work yourself, T

so i switched out the alternator and... bada bing bada boom! problem solved. thanks for the input. one more question, probably impossible to diagnose without seeing or driving. when i bought the car, first time i hit 100 k on highway, major vibration, turns out i had to get new tie rod ends in the front. stopped 90 percent of the vibration. i got tires checked and balanced, any ideas as to what might be the cause of the still current small vibration at higher speeds. although it is much less i can still feel it vibrate in the steering wheel, gas pedal, and seat.
