99 astro van grinding brakes when vehicle at stop Sign In

I have a 99 astro van with AWD and ABS (not sure if the first one matters)

It leaks power steering fluid and transmission fluid.
brake fluid is full and oil is fine.

after fighting to start the car (separate issues) it sounds alright till you depress the brake (moving or not) theres a horrid grinding sound (like grinding gears shifting)) it brakes with good power and shifts into revers and back forward (don't know if it will shift higher gears don't wanna risk taking it out just back and forth in the drive way) but grinds and gets worse the harder you press it and you can depress it all the way to the floor.. ABS light is on solid.

also can't do paperclip trick as the a&b slots aren't working for making the check engine light flash. so i cant see if its coding anything i can do to repair it.

Of course the paper clip won't work. It only works on OBD1 (pre 95). You need a code reader to retreive codes. Autozone will do it for free. Just don't buy any parts on their diagnosis. Get the code numbers.

If you are going after ABS codes, you will need a code reader capable of accessing ABS module.

On your brake noise, are you saying it will make the noise with the can not moving?
Where is the noise coming from?

ah didn't know that i have the computer reader just not on me till tomorrow and was hoping it was that simple lol thank you for the info about that.

as for the braking issue. yeah sitting with the car in park and pressing the brake makes that bad grinding noise. and having my father in law push the brake while i'm in front i feel the vibration traveling through the master brake cylinder. it sounds like its in the engine compartment or just below the car stereo.

My first thought was that maybe the clutch was having issues (automatic releases clutch before brakes actually depress (to my knowlage (minor michanical experience))) but it shifts into different drive and revers with zero issues and no noise. moving it back and fourth in the driveway i am able to bring it to a hard stop or slow stop like they were working normal but it vibrates all the way up you braking foot and makes that noise?

google only pulls up roter issues or brake pads being worn down anything related to the vehicle moving. but thasts not the case

No, the brakes can't grind if the wheel isn't turning. The automatic transmission has no clutch to release.

You may have a component vibrating somewhere but you need to narrow it down somehow.

This has Hydro-Boost for brake assist, which works off hydraulic pressure from the power steering.
Noise is probably emanating from that.

You stated you have a power steering leak, get that repaired first.
