'99 Toyota Tacoma - loud clicking when blower motor turned on Sign In

I have a '99 Tacoma that has developed a loud clicking or snapping if the blower motor is turned on. I could first hear it when driving at an RPM of at least 2K. It clicks like this every minute or 2 while driving as long as the blower motor is on. Under a load such as going up a steep hill it seems like it even causes a hard engine miss. I just discovered the other day that I can duplicate the noise when parked by running the engine at 2000-2500 RPM and turning the blower on. You really can't hear anything at normal idle speed. I had my wife keep turning it on and off at 2-2500 RPM while I tried to find out where the clicking is coming from but I couldn't find it under the hood. I'm wondering if it's coming from under the firewall/dash area.

Does anybody know what I'm hearing and why it would click like that periodically while driving or why it would affect performance?

OMG! I've heard of quite a few crazy problems but right now for the life of me I can't think of a correlation between the blower and engine performance! If blower was totally messed up electrically it should blow a fuse.

Perhaps one of several techs here has an idea but would like to know if when blower is off if there's never a performance issue?

For now a wild guess is if blower is fighting somehow with an diverter door if actuated by vacuum that's as close as I can get to making some connection between noise (loud!) and performance????

mine wasn't a click but more like a squeal
when i ran my blower motor is would every now and then

with loss of power going up hill
it also messed up my battery
i pulled out the plug from the blower motor and tested the wires and accidently found out that the wire were getting power when the vehicle was runing and the blower motor switch was off.
i changed the blower motor switch and the problem went away

It's supposed to have power all the time. The switch controls the ground side only.

I got to test my truck further today and found that the compressor is running (or cycling on and off) all the time when the blower switch is on, even if the A/C switch is off.

So what do you think is the most probable fix? Blower motor switch? Is there a way to test the system or switch?

Like MIKEL described, it is actually a squeal that occurs every time the compressor comes on. At higher RPM (2500-3000) it's louder. Any ideas?

Adjust or replace the belts.

Agreed, and, in fact, I did change the belt recently. So why is my A/C on all the time???

That's normal. they wire they to run most of the time now to remove moisture from the air in the cabin.

Disagree - it never ran full time before. I know how my truck runs plus, now that it's warmer here, I can tell it's blowing COLD air. What's the point of an A/C switch if it doesn't do anything?

Check to see if the A/C relay is stuck. Or possibly just the A/C switch is bad.

It has a module called an amplifier that controls the compressor so that's probably where your problem is.
It doesn't have a compressor relay.

OK - thanks for your inputs guys (or gals). I'm sure any further troubleshooting is beyond the scope of a forum but at least I have more info. than before and know more about what's going on.

Re: '99 Toyota Tacoma - loud clicking when blower motor turned on Sign In

I'll post when I get an answer. Until then I'm just not running the blower unless I have to. The clicking/squealing was stopped by tightening the belt. Glad I got it on a little loose or I would never have discovered the A/C running full time!

apurav,
You would need to start a new question of your own. We don't address more than one vehicle per question.
