99 Maxima starts then dies

I have a 99 Nissan Maxima. When you start it in the morning it fires and then dies about a second or two later. Then if you start it and give it a little gas it almost dies, then starts and seems to run just fine. Is this a problem with the fuel pump? or is it something else.
Also a month or so ago, after it would start it make a grinding noise exactly like when you turn the key to start and the starter engages while the engine is running. It hasn't made this noise in a while though.
