99 Maxima:E-Brake Cable Not Holding after Exhaust Work Sign In

I had our '99 Nissan Maxima worked on, replaced the resonator and pipe, rear and
front brakes, pads and rotors. The emergency brake worked OK before, now the handle goes all the way up and still doesn't hold ever since the job. The mechanic says the self-adjusting cylinders in the rear slip back as he thinks the threads are too worn.

Can this be the problem? I can replace the calipers myself if that's the case. I've adjusted the cable as far as it will go, checked for cable being stuck in the sheath. They both move an equal amount. I looked at the calipers and they don't seem to be in bad shape -- I'd rather not replace them now if I don't have to. Could there be something else that is causing this? Maybe something that got unhooked while they were working on the exhaust system before they put it back in?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My advice is take it back to the guy that did the work and tell him to fix whatever he broke.

The parking brake is built into the rear calipers so if he's saying that you suddenly need rear calipers, he broke them.

Quick search for procedures on adjusting parking brake if the components are all working. Some may describe this in owners manual. Note this may have different procedures than I found out there for this car as apparently two types of rear calipers were used.

Without being there and looking at it this is a listed procedure that should show but probably will be funky vs my view of it.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adjustment
  1. Pay attention to the following points after adjustment:
    There is no drag when control lever is being released Be sure that toggle lever returns to stopper when parking brake lever is released. Loosen parking brake cable Depress brake pedal fully more than five times Operate control lever 10 times or more with a full stroke of 8.01 inches. (203.5 mm). Adjust control lever or pedal by turning adjusting nut. Pull control lever with specified amount of force of: 44 lbs. (110-11 notches). Check lever stroke and ensure smooth operation Bend warning lamp switch plate. Warning lamp should come on when lever is pulled 1 notch. It should go off when the lever is fully released.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Typo even in this for # of notches - not 110-11 but would be 10-11. If this set up the tech(s) who did the work should have verified that it was working and set it before you got the vehicle back IMO.

Quote ">> he thinks the threads are too worn.<<" That suggests 'he' isn't sure and up to tech to verify no guess,

You had a working caliper when you came in and now after he tried to retract it (and probably didn't know how), you have a broken caliper. Sounds like it was damaged by the shop to me.

Thank you both for the prompt replies. Helps with the peace of mind knowing I can go in there and have them remedy this.

You can try................ That doesn't mean they will do the right thing willingly.

Re: 99 Maxima:E-Brake Cable Not Holding after Exhaust Work Sign In

  Tried adjusting the cable up as far as it would go, then got under the car and had someone operate the cable up and down, watching the travel of the actuating lever on the caliper. Noticed it was going as far as possible
and still not bringing the cylinder up to the stopping point. That is forcing the pads against the rotor as
would happen if it was working correctly. Figured the problem was in the calipers.
As the mechanic described the problem, he said putting new pads on put the piston in a different
spot on the adjusting threads and this was a worn area. Don't know if he was right but I repl. the calipers
myself and now the parking brake works as it should. Some blog responders claim he may have broken
the existing calipers. This guy has been doing car repair for 30 plus years and I don't know why he
wouldn't know how to back set the pistons. But, the reason I didn't have him do it, he wanted a lot more
than I was willing to shell out. Joe in Il.

I guess that explains the damaged calipers.
