'99 Chevy Cavalier | p0335, p0342, intermittent hard start & backfiring Sign In

Hi there,
I’m writing about my 1999 Chevy Cavalier (2.2 liter engine with 119k miles on it). I’m so desperate to find out what the problem is with my car. It’s been over a month and to 2 shops and I’ve spent $1,600 and no one can fix it!

My car issue started with it simply not starting up right away. Once in awhile, it would turn over just fine (crank, crank, crank), but not start. When this would happen, I put the key in the OFF position, waited a few seconds and tried again and it would start right up.
A couple of weeks later, the problem seemed to be happening almost every time I tried to start it and I was getting the occasional backfire when starting it. Finally, the check engine light came on and then my speedometer went nuts and finally quit.

I brought it to the shop. The check engine light codes were p0335 & p0342. The camshaft sensor was okay, so they replaced the crankshaft sensor. It seemed fine until I started it the next day and then it was back to the same old problem. I took it back to the shop and they found that the battery had a short or something in it so they replaced it.

I drove away and the speedometer was fixed, but the rest was the same. I brought it back to the shop. He switched out the ignition module with another one and looked it over, but they were stumped and told me to take it to the Chevy dealer.

After over $400 in ‘diagnosis’, the dealer told me they thought it was the PCM (mentioned an internal open), but they said it could be the reluctor wheel also. THey say they checked the wiring harness and the connections. They also recommended I replace the starter since it was slow (draw was 195 amps). Because they said the starter wasn’t directly related to the problem, I declined the starter replacement and allowed them to replace the PCM. When they received the PCM, they said it made my car worse so they ordered a second one. When they put the second one in, they said they were having a lot of trouble programming it, so I had to wait a few more days. Finally, they told me the PCM was in and that it had ‘improved’ the car, but that I really needed a new starter because it’s slow and has oil in it and it’s damaging my flywheel. They said the reluctor wheel looked okay from what they could see w/out removing the oilpan (they want an additional $300 to remove oilpan and look). They had my car for 3 weeks and charged me almost $1,200 and when I went to pick it up, the check engine light was still on, it was doing the same old thing with the starting and it even backfired in their parking lot when I tried to start it!

Currently, it still has the p0335 & p0342 codes and is doing all of the same things. Can anyone advise?
The timing belt on this vehicle has never been changed--could that possibly be it?
Thanks so much!!

The one without the engine size is for the 2.2 liter engine. The other 2 are for the 2.4 liter engine. If we knew which engine is in the vehicle it would make our lives easier. P0335 is the ckp circuit. P0342 is the cmp circuit.

Oh yeah, I had it in there, but it's easy to miss. :)
I have a 2.2 liter engine.

With a 12 volt digital multimeter you want to start by checking voltage between Blue connector terminal A (Black wire) and Blue connector Terminal B (Pink wire) with key on engine off. Red probe of multimeter backprobes into Pink wire terminal, black probe of meter backprobes into Black wire terminal. Battery voltage should be present. Keep the probes in the connector terminals and gently wiggle the harness working your hand up through the entire harness, watching the meter the whole time, if you wiggle the harness and the meter voltage changes, you have found a broken wire. If the test proves good, post back and we'll go further.
