Hi guys. I'm a DIY type of fella, but I know nothing about cars shy of simple maintenance. I decided since my 99 cavalier is my second car I would use that to learn. So, I took on a front brake pad/rotor job. My issue is with the caliper bolts. I was able to undo them enough to get the caliper off the old rotor, but that was with severely worn pads and rotor. Now that I have new rotors and new pads, I have to undo the bolts further, and they just spin. I noticed a rubber boot or seal, something, on the 3/8 hex caliper bolts. I didn't try pulling that back to see if there was some kind of nut or something there, but I have no other idea why I can't get the bolts out. One is further out than the other, but both just spin in place after getting them out far enough to remove the caliper. So, unless i find out how to remove the caliper bolts, I can't get the caliper back on. Please help. Thanks alot. Dave

Nevermind i figured it out. Weird though. If you apply a twisting, pulling force as you're turning the screws out, they will come out further. If not, they will just spin. I had to apply that force as I was using the hex socket to turn them out, by kinda gripping the screw with the socket and pulling away as I twisted. Hard to explain in text but basically, just had to pull the screw as I was trying to get them out, and then push in as I was trying to screw them in. No other problems. What a difference fresh brake pads and rotors make. I was having all kinds of grinding, wheel vibrating, vibrations in the brake peddle, etc. All that is gone. The brake pads were 100% worn, all rusted, and the rotors were half rusted. In fact, I broke the 'hat' on one rotor trying to whack it off with a 12lb sledge. It was completely rusted to the hub. Worked on it for 30 minutes, including adding heat and grease. What a pain in the arse.

Yes, the caliper slides on those bolts so they are just pulled right out. Twisting helps if they are sticking to the rubber. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
