98 explorer turns over no start Sign In

1998 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOCH
brief history of what I have done. fuel pump bad, replaced with new - car started and ran fine no problems for 1 week. then would turn over and no start again. replaced fuel filter no change, replaced fuel pump relay no change. so I replaced fuel pump again and car started and ran for 1 day and now I am back to square one. turns over but no start. when key turned on pump will pump but when turn to start will only turn over and not start.

What is the fuel pressure when it won't start? Did you make sure that there wasn't anything floating in the bottom of the fuel tank that could contaminate your new fuel pump?

Does it have spark when it doesn't want to start?

I know I sound like a idiot but as far as I know yes it has spark. I just don't understand why it would start and run for a week and then just stop again. And then when I put another fuel pump in it started and ran for 1 day. I am no mech. by no means and trying to solve and repair myself as I am very limited to funds at this time. I do thank you for your help.

Your funds are what we try to save. No sense in throwing parts at it. The way we diagnose something like this is to see if it has spark, fuel pressure, injector pulse and compression. You say as far as you know it has spark. Is that verified with a spark tester? Do you have injector pulse verified by a noid light? Both are inexpensive tools. Cheap way to check spark in a no start is to spray a bit of carb cleaner down the intake when it won't start and see if it fires from it. Fuel pressure testers for this are also inexpensive and way cheaper than fuel pumps. Do you have a multimeter and know a bit about how to operate it?

Re: 98 explorer turns over no start Sign In

Just wondering if it has spark when it doesn't want to start because if it didn't have spark and no fuel pressure while cranking, it could be missing a crank signal to the engine computer. Computer won't turn on the pump relay during starting if it doesn't see the crank signal. It is important that you do know you have spark during the no start.

If you have spark and no fuel pressure while cranking, probably would be a good idea to break out the volt meter and check for voltage to the pump during cranking. One easy place to check for voltage is at the fuel pump inertia cut off switch connector. That would be to confirm the pump is getting power during the no start.

I will need to get these things and test everything out. I will get back with you after I do this. I may take me a few days to get it done. I will be back to let you know. Thank you again you are giving me a starting point to check.
