98 Voyager Over Heating...

Got a 98 Plymouth Voyager with a 3.3 engine and 230,000 miles. Everything is working, and has been serviced regularly. Now it is over heating and when I turn the car off when the needle is on hot, I can hear the coolant boiling. A fried asked to listen if the Radiator fans turn on, and they do not. Based on that, we changed the Radiator fan relay. The fan still does not come on and the "Service Engine soon" light comes on now. The old relay did show signs of of a short. After this when I turned the car off the car started leaking coolant:

  • Coolant level is fine
  • Air Conditioning stops cooling the air when the car is about to overheat.
  • Sometimes when I drive when it is on hot, it will eventually cool back down by itself
I need to know if the engine is blown, or if this is repairable relatively cheapUnsure

Is this truck overheating at highway speeds also or just in stop or slow traffic situations?

You need to get a test light from a parts store. . Check for power at the socket for the relay. There shoud be power at two of the slots . If not check all fuses for power on both sides . let us know what you find.

The truck uses a solid state relay with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation}. This makes it very difficult to test the relay. You can check it for power in but that's about all. They did have a lot of problems with the plugs overheating and not making good contact. They sell replacement pigtails to repair that.

Has anyone had any experience with why the radiator fan does not turn on?

OOPS *The ol memory is going. Cant remember whats next. As HT was good enough to remind me . The control relay is a solid state . It's about the half the size of a i pod . It's mounted on the inside of the drivers side frame rail in front of the tire. Lay under car look up and you will see it. It's common failure item . Usally its either the fan motor or it. Its the cheaper of the two .

Could be a blown fan. Use the vans battery as an external power source. Jump the fan motor directly to the battery. If the fan comes on you know the fan its good. If the fan doesn’t come on you know it’s bad.Wink
“Burp” the system to rule out an air pocket issue.
Have you confirmed an operational thermostat?

Well that means there is at least one stored code in the computer. Get the computer scanned and post any stored code(s) so we can see them.
Rule out a blown head gasket. Do that by postin the results of a compression test, cylinder leak down test, or the results of a block tester kit. You can buy a block tester kit at any well stocked auto supply store. Be sure to follow all the instructions supplied with the kit and post the results of the test so we can see them.

I think it's a bit premature for checking for a blown head gasket . No mention was made as to rough running ,steam in exhaust etc. If he has access to making jumping leads he could do that.I dont see an airpocket causing fans not to come on . They should should come on when a/c is on regardless.

I believe HT & RT are on the right track.....

Hmmm, I wonder what the odds of it having a P1491 are???? Slim to none???? Crazy

Hi, im the aformentioned friend. When we changed the relay the old one had a slight burn/melt mark at the base of one of the prongs. The check engine light that came on after the relay was changed was for the cooling fan relay (you got it p1491). Why did this code pop up after the relay was changed and why does the fan still not come on? Thanks

As I said before, The pigtail is burned and not making a good contact. This is a know problem on those relays.
It could also have blown the fuse now.

Hi, im back. I changed the pigtail and the fans still don't go on.....
