98 Monte Carlo Upper Intake Manifold Sign In

After having my vehicle spew white smoke with the smell of antifreeze out of the exhaust, I had it taken to a body shop to get it checked out. They believe it to be the upper intake manifold. The problem from here is that they were going to charge me $220 for a UIM kit. After doing some research, it seems that that is demonstrably higher than what it should cost for the part. The quote that they immediately gave me was $950. After pursuing the cost of all of the work and parts, the quote was suddenly $750. That is with 6 hours of labor, which also seems to be quite a long time to get the job done. What I am hoping for is some advice on what to do next.

Thanks!

$500 to $650 would be more in range. Why are you looking for mechanic work at a body shop anyway? They are probably subbing it out to someone else anyway. Body shops are known for having any mechanical talent on the premises.

I misused body shop. It is an automotive parts & services shop. The problem that I am running into is that I am away from home on business. Had I still been at home, I spoke with a friend that does auto repairs independently that gave me a $400 quote. I was expecting something in the $500-$700 range as well.

Probably a good reason to have your regular shop give your car an inspection before you head out on a trip next time.
