98 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Starter Clicks But Won't Turn Sign In

I'm having some troubles.

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, V8 5.2?, 160,000 Miles.

The starter clicks when I turn the key, but nothing more than that.

It did this a couple weeks ago, then randomly started again, and was able to drive for 2 weeks with no problem. Then the same issue happened again a couple of days ago, and we can't get it started.

We've check the cable connections on the battery and the started and they are all tight. I took the battery down to Autozone to be tested and charged, and it took a fresh charge. Still no luck.

I couple of times I got the starter to slowly turn the crank, but very slowly and didn't help.

I also hear a small sound coming from the fuse box as if there maybe an issue or a short going on, but I am not sure if the sound is normal. It's a small buzz.

WHAT COULD BE MY PROBLEM!?!?

That sounds like it's probably a bad starter.

Just to add: Cables being tight doesn't mean they are making a good connection. They need to be clean and tight - also the ground wire to engine block could be a poor connection there too and not enough amps delivered to starter. Current has to be able to make the full loop,

Battery cables have been cleaned well... but not sure about the ground to the engine.. where would I be able to locate that?

If you removed the starter and brought it to a parts store, that test is worthless. If it's not in the car at the time, the test doesn't mean anything.

The next time it's dead try to jump power to the small terminal of the starter and see if it cranks.

Confirm a circuit to the starter. To do this ground one side of a test light and touch the other side of the light to voltage at the starter

Next have someone sit behind the steering wheel and turn the ignition key all the way forward to the full start position. If the test light glows you have a circuit. At this point you can tap on the starter a few times with a hammer. If the jeep starts, it means that the starter is defective and must be replaced.

If there is no circuit to the starter it could mean that the starter relay is defective. That could be the buzzing sound you are hearing from the fuse box. Locate the relay that is buzzing, and tap it a few times with the handle of a screwdriver.

If the Jeep starts it means that the relay is defective and must be replaced. Also (and just as a test) you can try swapping the starter relay with another relay in the fuse box that has the same part number as the starter relay to see if the Jeep starts.

Quote from back a few ">> Battery cables have been cleaned well... but not sure about the ground to the engine.. where would I be able to locate that?<<" -------------- I've found those messed up on brand new cars! Follow ground wire from battery, should be one contiguous cable to good metal of engine, usually bolted or bolted with something else. Also cables themselves can be a problem and just not deliver enough amps. You can test that with a volt meter which can be discussed later. Try all things mentioned as they are all in the cards. When and if swapping a relay of same part # only use the one for A/C or if you swap from most others it may crank normally if that's the issue but not run. Happy hunting, T
